Pentrepoeth Primary - Pioneer Schools Network
This is an exciting time for our school! On 30 June 2015 the Minister for Education and Skills announced that the Welsh Government would, alongside schools, local authorities, regional consortia, Estyn, leading academics and employers as well as other key stakeholders build a new curriculum in Wales.
Successful Futures, Professor Graham Donaldson’s independent review of the curriculum and assessment arrangements in Wales sets out how this should be done. Pentrepoeth Primary School, alongside other schools has been considered best placed to become a Pioneer School – charged with building the new curriculum framework and designing and leading the professional development that will support all schools to realise it.
Pioneer Schools represent a critically important and a very exciting opportunity to be part of an all-Wales partnership team that will play a key role in ensuring better learning and higher standards for all of our children and young people and ultimately for Wales itself.
At Pentrepoeth, our main focus is providing our children with meaningful learning experiences weaving the important teaching of Languages, Literacy and Communication, Mathematics and Numeracy and ICT through an innovative, relevant and inspiring curriculum. Along with the children, we plan opportunities to practise these skills across the curriculum.
When taught outside of the traditional ‘English’, ‘Maths’ and ‘ICT’ lessons, these are known as Literacy, Numeracy and Digital Competence. We apply these skills through a ‘project’ based approach which we have outlined in the following pages. We use Rights Respecting Schools and Values Based Education to underpin this work, creating ambitious, capable; healthy, confident; enterprising, creative; and ethical informed 21st Century Learners
Professor Donaldson’s report on the curriculum and assessment arrangements in Wales sets out 4 purposes of the curriculum in Wales which are outlined on below. There's a Youtube video which is a useful reference for you.

Planning our Route to the New Curriculum
The new curriculum is not here yet, but we will be moving towards it over the next year in many ways, some of which we aim to set out here.
Next year, along with the children, using the Four Purposes described in Donaldson's Successful Futures document, we will plan lots of opportunities to practice skills across the curriculum taking into account learning and experience. However, we will ensure that we give the children their entitlement under the current curriculum arrangements whilst maintaining our focus on excellent standards, attainment and achievement.
We do this through a ‘topic’ based approach which we have outlined above. We use Rights Respecting Schools and Values Based Education to underpin this work, creating ethical and informed 21st Century Learners
